During the COVID-19 pandemic, as a member of the Jesuit community, I witnessed firsthand the deep struggles faced by countless people in our community people who were left stranded without food, shelter, or the means to support their families. The crisis hit hard, and the isolation and fear were overwhelming. But it was in these difficult moments that I saw the true power of solidarity and compassion unfold.

As part of the Jesuit Chennai province, we quickly mobilized our resources to support those most in need. We worked tirelessly, reaching out to individuals who were completely alone, some without even the essentials to survive. With the help of 453 volunteers, we distributed 19,766 dry ration kits, provided nutritious food to 530 children, and conducted 27 awareness programs to educate people about safety measures. But it wasn’t just about physical needs; we knew that the mental and emotional toll of this crisis was immense. So, we also offered counselling to over 120,000 people, ensuring they had someone to turn to during those dark days.

Additionally, we provided financial support to 297 individuals who had lost their livelihoods, and set up shelter homes for 300 people, offering them a safe space when they had nowhere else to go. In total, we assisted over 1.9 lakh individuals, including organizing 40 rescue operations and supporting 2,000 individuals in quarantine centres.

It was humbling to see the profound impact of our collective efforts. As a Jesuit, my calling is to serve those in need, and the pandemic reminded me of the importance of this mission. It was not just the physical assistance that made a difference, but the spirit of unity and care that uplifted so many during their most challenging moments. Through these acts of service, we were able to show the community that they were not forgotten, that they had hope, and that together, we could navigate even the darkest times.
