Struggle for Housing Patta

Mrs Lakshmi, a community leader from Saravanapuram Village in Gingee Circle, Villupuram District, was among the many Irular families who struggled for years without a house patta, a crucial document for securing government housing benefits. Despite numerous attempts and petitions, many had been misled by people claiming to help them obtain house pattas in exchange for money, without success.

Her journey took a turn when she became involved in the Lok Munch initiative. After receiving leadership training, she gained the tools to advocate effectively for her community. With a clear understanding of the legal and administrative process, she prepared petitions for house pattas, both for new housing and for converting temporary pattas into permanent ones.

Lakshmi’s persistence paid off when 25 families were granted new house pattas, and 22 families saw their temporary pattas converted to permanent ones. This victory, which she describes as extraordinary, was made possible by the unity and collective action of the Irular community. As a woman leading this initiative, Lakshmi felt a deep sense of pride and empowerment, grateful for the training and support she received through Lok Munch and Palavai.
