Transforming Her Village Through Leadership
Sivagami, a community leader from Melmalayanur, witnessed her village struggling with poor infrastructure, stagnant water, and the resulting health crises. Children frequently fell ill with typhoid, malaria, and dengue due to the broken water tank and lack of proper drainage, leaving the community in despair. Determined to bring change, Sivagami, empowered by the training she received at Palavai centres, led her villagers in addressing these issues.
Taking the lead, Sivagami organized a Grama Sabha meeting in 2021 and tirelessly petitioned local government authorities, including the VAO and Collector, for two years. Her relentless advocacy was rewarded on November 19, 2023, when the construction of a concrete drainage system and the repair of the water tank were completed. For the first time, her village had clean roads and a functioning water system, sparking hope and pride among the residents. Sivagami’s unwavering determination has not only improved her village’s living conditions but also inspired her community to believe in the power of persistence and collective action.
