The Story of Kanakunthur: A Community's Struggle for Water

In the tribal village of Kanakunthur, home to 80 tribal families, the struggle for drinking water was a constant challenge. Despite a 1,000-liter water tank installed by the local panchayat three years ago, it was far from sufficient to meet the entire community’s needs. Despite bringing the issue to the attention of government officials, nothing changed, leaving the villagers in a dire situation.

Determined to bring change, community leaders of PARAN centre: Rukumani, Nagammal, Poonkodi, Nithiya, and Sudhamani tirelessly petitioned local authorities. Their persistence, which included presenting a formal petition on October 2, 2023, and multiple meetings with the Sub Collector in January 2024, eventually bore fruit. The local panchayat has now committed to expanding the water facility, and work is currently underway.

Thanks to the relentless efforts and teamwork of these dedicated community leaders, the long-awaited water facility is finally being implemented, ensuring that the villagers will no longer have to endure the hardships of water scarcity. This achievement is a testament to the power of perseverance and collective action in the face of adversity.
