Celebrating Irular Heritage The Maasi Magam Festival

The PALAVAI Tribal Centre organized a cultural visit for 18 college students from the Velicham Cultural Troupe to the Maasi Magam Festival in Mahabalipuram on 12 March 2025. Led by staff member Mr. Pasupathi, the program aimed to showcase the rich traditions of the Irular tribe through folk arts while enhancing students’ creative participation.

During the event, the Velicham Irular Cultural Troupe performed traditional art forms, gaining wide appreciation and strengthening the visibility of Irular heritage. The students learned about the historical and cultural significance of the Maasi Magam Festival, which holds deep importance for the Irular community.

The celebration promoted cultural exchange, boosted the confidence of Irular performers, and highlighted the need to preserve indigenous art forms through youth engagement and community-led initiatives.
